Wastewater holds considerable untapped potential for climate-friendly heating. To further exploit this heat source for the energy transition in North Rhine-Westphalia, the Wastewater Heat NRW initiative has been networking stakeholders from the water industry, energy supply, sewage network operation, and housing sector since 2024. The aim is to promote professional exchange, provide knowledge, and support the implementation of concrete projects for utilising wastewater heat.
A new technical guideline on wastewater heat recovery has recently been published with extensive input from the agw. It offers project developers practical support in identifying and exploiting potential for wastewater heat utilisation.
Additionally, the topic page „Wastewater heat in NRW“ has been extensively expanded. New additions include further projects on the project map, an initial overview of available potential maps for wastewater heat from sewage systems, and additional information on contracts, feasibility studies, technical regulations, and planning and approval procedures.
